It can be incredibly difficult to describe why an image moves us. It can come from the nature of the light falling on the subject, the unknown depths behind their eyes, or the context of a singular moment being captured. The still image can transport us anywhere. Motion pictures hold that same power, but rely on our suspension of disbelief, an all too tenuous relationship between filmmakers and the audience that must be maintained (or cleverly broken) to deliver a film's message, whatever that may or may not be. Cinematography is one piece of this bridge between the story and the audience. Visual language with its consistency, and volatility, must be crafted with care. The images must complement all other parts of the process, allowing the sum, the final film, to be greater than any one piece of the art form.
        Collaboration is paramount to effective filmmaking. As often as films are presented as singular visions, they are better described as collective dreams. Ideas communicated clearly between filmmakers-at-work will translate through the screen to an audience. We either work together or fall apart.
       ‘Right tool, right job’, is a constant refrain I have heard since childhood. Production is full of tools and equipment, cinematography is no exception (and often the culprit). There are no cure-alls for problems that arise while making a movie. There are best practices and learned knowledge, and we must be prepared to problem-solve with creativity and make the most of what we have on hand. Know your tools, but remember it is all in service of the stories we are trying to tell.
